Check Your Risk Assessment
Annual Crash Risk
The chances of having a crash have been calculated by the Transport Research Laboratory, based on a survey of nearly twenty thousand drivers.
The following formula can be used to check your risk assessment and calculate the likely crash rates for different groups of drivers and is often used by insurance companies to work out premiums which accurately reflect crash risk.
Go through the list, noting your personal scores for each category:
Annual Mileage Under 2,000 2,000 to 3,499 3,500 to 6,999 7,000 to 12,999 13,000 plus
Score 1 2 3 4 5
Age 17 to 21 22 to 29 30 to 46 47 plus
Score 4 3 2 1
Time since test passed Under 8 Months 8 to 20 Months 21 to 59 Months 5 to 16 Years Over 16 Years
Score 5 4 3 2 1
Now add your scores together, and see how you compare below:
If your score is:
Then your chance of being involved in a collision this year is:
12 or more 11 10 9 8 7 6 5 or less
1 in 2.4 1 in 3 1 in 4 1 in 5 1 in 6 1 in 8 1 in 11 1 in 14
Research suggests that crashes happen more frequently to some drivers than an average crash rate might suggest. It is possible that having had a bad crash, and if no corrective training is undertaken, you are more than twice as likely to have a similar crash within the next three years
