Meeting Your Needs

'Do your drivers think about how their driving affects fuel consumption and wear and tear on the vehicle'?

'When approaching roundabouts and junctions do your drivers plan to stop but look to go'?

'Are your management and workforce working towards a common goal'?

The meaning of the term 'workplace' has expanded greatly in recent years, now encompassing the motor vehicle be it car, van, lorry or bus as a place of work. With this in mind the Health and Safety executive has started to take a closer look if anything goes wrong when driving for work. This has become known as 'occupational road risk'.

Management of occupational road risk (MORR) is becoming harder and more complicated as companies grow and diversify, but it shouldn't be seen as a chore, or a further drain on company expenditure.

No Management team needs to be told that the workforce is their greatest asset, but telling them that they might not be getting the best from their workforce is altogether different. So what can be done? The answer is assessment and training. If a new machine comes into the workplace then the operators are given training on how to use it; so why not their driving? 'Remember' most drivers are only tested on their driving once in a lifetime.

MORR works in two ways, not only does it protect the workforce, but the management at the same time. The company is seen to be covering its responsibilities under the health and safety umbrella, and the workforce feel more valued because an area of their work, that can at times seem very solitary, is being identified as important.
